My personal goals
Short Term = I would like to do more in the dark room and learn more on how to process films the whole process is very interesting and something i am eager to learn more on, I am also going to learn more on lighting and how best to use and balance it out. Lightroom is also something i would like to learn more on, as i use photoshop and have no experience of lightroom at all.
Long Term = I am going to open my own studio one day and offer a whole range of portraits and not just the basic sit and shoot. Im full of ideas and with more education i feel this will be possible one day and i will be able to put my ideas into practise.

Critical Studies By Katy
In the lesson we learnt how to make a shoe box camera, and we got to use them to see how they worked in practise. I got the shoe box and totally covered the inside with black tape which sealed all the corners and any possible cracks or holes that way have let light in, while in the process of sealing the box we had to make a hole in the top which we covered in tin foil and then a tiny pin hole was made in it followed by a flap being added over the top of the pin hole in order to prevent exposure until it was necessary.
After sealing all the edges we went into the dark room where we popped a piece of photographic paper inside the box, this was done in the dark room again to prevent exposure. After totally sealing the box and placing the photographic paper inside, we went outside and with the sun directly on me, i opened the flap and held the box in front of me for approximately 20 seconds.
I then covered the hole with the flap and went back to the dark room to remove the photo. I placed it into the developer for 1 min and then 30 seconds in the stock bath, followed by 3 minutes in the fixative solution and then into the wash for 20 minutes.
I was extremely impressed with this practical work and found it fascinating how something as simple as a shoe box could produce photographic images. Although the finished result was not as good as i would have liked i felt i should have exposed myself to it for maybe a little longer as it wasn't very clear even though i could work out what it was. I really enjoyed this from start to finish and it gave me a bigger insight as to how a camera works and that they are really not as complex as people may be lead to think. In my opinion i think a little more exposure time might have made the portrait more dominant and more easily readable to our eye's.

The Trajectory career of Navad Kander
Born in Tel Aviv December 1961
Later moving to South Africa at the age of 2.
At the age of 13 Navad started taking photographs with a Pentax camera and the photograph's he took then had the same sense of quiet and unease that is still part of his photography work today. He was once quoted as saying "the eye only needs to see a fragment and the mind fill in the rest" and how true is that? As the years progressed Navad had a motor bike accident and it was only after this accident he started to focus on his photography, He hated school so education was irrelevant to him he never went on to further education or pursued training within photography. After leaving school the South Africans started forcing white male citizens to partake in national service, so Navad ensured he followed in his fathers footsteps and was drafted into the air force and he ended up in a dark room where he printed Ariel pictures for 2 years which is where his photography career took off. After leaving the air force he moved to America and then England before returning to South Africa in 1985 where he met up with Nichole again and they both went to England together in 1986. They married in the bush in Africa in 1991 and lived in London where they started their family.
Navad was pretty much inspired by his fathers love for photographing his year's worth of film would be shown to them in a slide show and it was this that gives Navad his first introduction to the photography possibilities and the pleasure it brought him. Navad's Sister Tamar's love for art had a great influence on Navad which during a holiday to Europe when he was 14 his sister took every opportunity to visit art galleries with him.
Navad's work inspires a lot of people and he has a huge audience to which he displays his work for. Over the years since Navad started to take up photography his work created images in an age of radical change, he also spurs participation in the climate changes debate's with his work on Yangtze River speaking of a China in a process of radical changes and of mans futility and subjugation of the natural.

Navad Kander was awarded the prestigious Prix Pictet earth 2009 prize which he won in 2010 for the Yankzie River Exhibition. He was named international photographer of the year at the 7th Annual Lucie awards in 2009, and he also received awards from the art directors club, IPA in the USA from the D&AD, the John Kobal Foundation in the UK and Epica in Europe, He was also awarded with the Royal Photographic Society's "Terence Donovan Award in 2002" In 2008 he was awarded with the silver photographer of the year at Lianzhou international Photo Festival in China. In October 2009 Navad won the prestigious world leading prize in photography & sustainability which this prize plays to a global audience of over 400 million, he won this award again for the 48 images included in Yangtze River.
Over the years Navad has photographed a lot of people and he is famous for portraits of famous people which include President Obama and the people around him like vice president Joe Biden and Eugene Kang special assistant to the president, he has also photographed the likes of Robbie Williams, Morrissey, Cheryl Cole, David Cameron, Lewis Hamilton, Ricky Gervais and many others. He also photographed Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill for a New York Magazine. He would love to photograph Mandela and Bob Dylan.
Navad also did an interview with the Guardian Newspaper =
"More people live along the Yangtze river than live in the US. So, on my first trip to China, I wanted to get a sense of this by visiting Shanghai and Chongqing, a massive city of 27 million people, where this image was taken.
I was in a dirty part of town. There was this little toxic stream flowing past a steel plant into the Yangtze. It was literally popping with chemicals - it actually looked like it was raining. And right next to it was this picnic area. For most of the people of Chongqing, it is a picturesque place to go and visit; some were even swimming and fishing. The sight made me uncomfortable, then I realised they were all just having a wonderful time - proving that relationships and family are what really matters.
So I approached this group and set the camera down. I made it look like I was photographing to the left, then I turned it to the right, paused, and took their picture. Had I asked permission, they would have turned towards me and it would all have been different. I did check with them afterwards, to make sure it was OK. I was already excited. I knew the image would work.
I became interested in the whole migrant aspect of life in China, where around 150 million people move around, constantly working, hardly seeing their families, sometimes from year to year. So I started photographing individuals in one place and then transferring them into other pictures, in a sort of "photographic migration".
The blurred person at the head of this table was actually shot on a building site in Shanghai. I put him in over the man who was there originally. The fact that the guy on the right is sitting in a very similar chair is just a coincidence. It is one of the happiest, most pleasant pictures I've ever taken".
Navad's work seems to appeal to a whole range of range of people from all different backgrounds and era's, his work also entails a whole lot of variations with not just one subject that he focuses on. His work on celebrities seems to appeal to the younger generation especially with the likes of Robbie Williams, Cheryl Cole and the whole pop idols from different era's is inspiring to both the older and younger generations. His landscape photography is absolutely stunning with the beautiful surroundings around the Yangtze River which may appeal to the older generation although they appealed to me and one of my daughters. The photographs are stunning and executed with a technical brilliance that could only be possessed by a master photographer. Navad's work is not just situated in one particular area he has travelled around most of his adult life capturing the beauty of the area's he has visited.
His Aims = To one day photograph Mandela and Bob Dylan.
Here are a few of Navad's Photograph's.

Jonathan Knowles Photography
January 1988 – Present (23 years 10 months)
Trainee at Dorland Advertising
Everyday we come across something that Jonathon has photographed whether its in a newspaper, TV advert, magazine, or billboard. His work is certainly world wide and appreciated by many. He appeals to most people with his eye grabbing adverts in one way or another. Over the years Jonathon started using digital enhancement to produce to magnificent adverts we see and yet his photo quality is still as good as ever. My personal thoughts on Jonathon's work is envy and awe, the time and effort he puts into his work to produce the ideas he has on paper are second to non, He is guaranteed to get the best shot possible from whatever is put in front of him and his vision on how the items are going to look are always profoundly amazing. I was very lucky to have spoke to Jonathon personally and to me he is totally dedicated to what he does and obviously wishes to share it with others like myself. I just hope is has no plans to retire any time soon.

Craig is extremely proud of his culture and origins he has great empathy for the emotional pull of his native home land, while he proudly expresses his Highland background and by looking at his work you can see how it relates to his location and illustrates his life experiences in many ways especially his own personal experience of emigration. His images are both contemporary and historical in dealing with life, death, religion and ritual I personally think Craig has the ability to capture all of the topics and show them in a way that we can relate to, although some of his images could be considered quite stark and shocking. Craig's fantastic photographs have captured how Scotland as aspired all around the world with the help of great Scottish artists, musicians and celebrities. This is shown in his portraits of the Salts Of The World Exhibition where he demonstrates his reinvented frames of great Scots that have helped to shape the image of modern Scotland, Craig's motivation for this project came from an interest in the reasons why a small country has had such a huge influence on the modern world, and how aspects of Scottish looks and character are still apparent in the descendants of those who left home. which as now very much been brought into the modern world.
Craig's website is certainly something everyone should look at, its exciting and mind blowing http://www.craigmackay.co.uk/index2.htm

Reflective Practise
During the lesson we were made to think about ourselves and how when you think deeper you can relate to a number of everyday things. We were told to go and take a photograph of something that we can relate to and i took this photograph = Open Doors
My reasons for choosing this :
Open to every opportunity
Never closed as I'm open and approachable
Open minded
Neat and even
I am never held back as the open door is a symbol of passage from one place to another.

Happy Bidding

Business Planning
Happy Bidding
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Business Planning
There really is a great deal to think about when considering starting up a business
. Tax/NI - Self assessments every April inc sales, expences, profit/loss, classes of NI.
Personal allowances £7475 can be earned each year before TAX and NI has to be paid,
anything you earn over £7475 then you would need to set aside 20% for TAX and 9% for NI
. VAT - Businesses and the goods or services it provides count as what's known as 'taxable
supplies' you'll have to register for VAT if either: your turnover for the previous 12 months has
gone over a specific limit - called the 'VAT threshold' (currently £73,000) or you think your
turnover will soon go over this limit.
. Insurance - Business insurance would have to include contents, buildings and personal injury for
both yourself and customers also a risk assessment on the proposed business premises, equipment
and a whole number of other aspects to be considered depending on the business type. Also
consider there is a lot of competition on the market at the moment so selecting the right one for you
may need a little more investigating.
. Property - Consider how long the lease is for, what bills are included in the rent and what bills are
excluded from the rent. Also the size of the property and its capacity to enable full use of
equipment.
. Employing staff - You don't have to be a limited company to employ staff, sole traders can
employ staff too, you need to be clear on your requirements and reasons, and make sure your
prospective employee/freelancer/self employed is very clear as to the terms under which you are
employing them or buying their services. Consider if the job is going to be on a full-time basis, or
part-time basis, short term or long term basis. You are responsible for deducting the correct amount
of tax and NI contributions from their pay and submitting it to HMRC although if you are
employing on a self employed basis they will be responsible for paying their own contributions.
. Convert your business to a Limited Company
Most entrepreneurs and self employed people are so busy it becomes difficult to stand back and gain
perspective on your business. But you might find that if you can spare the time to take the
opportunity to stand back and spend some time planning and thinking that the decisions that you
make will save you time and money and will lead to a more profitable business.
Thanks to changes in rules in recent years by the Government instead of being self employed you
might find it very well worth your while to form a limited company and save yourself paying more
tax than you need.
1. The principal benefit of trading as a limited company has always been the limited liability bestowed upon the company's officers and shareholders. As a sole trader or other non-limited business, personal assets are at risk in the event of failure of the business, but this is not the case for a limited company. As long as ths business is operated legally and within the terms of the Companies Act, directors' or shareholders' personal assets are not at risk in the event of a winding up or receivership. And as often happens on occasion, such events are not always under our own control.
2. The first £10,000 of a limited company's profits are tax free. This is not the case for sole traders and partnerships.
3. Company profits may be distributed as dividends to shareholders. Presently, National Insurance is not applicable to dividend payments, effectively reducing your tax liability still further.
4. Operating as a limited company often gives suppliers and customers a sense of confidence in a business. Quite often, larger organisations in particular will prefer not to deal with non-limited businesses.
. Marketing - Consider where the company is going to operate, how your going to promote the business ie: website, leaflets, advertising. Consider who your customers are going to be and what they will require. While bearing in mind the costs and charges your going to be applying in order to cover your expenses and enable a wage to be made.
